RNA polymerases produce strands of RNA. There are two types:

  1. DNA-directed RNA polymerase is ubiquitous in all life, and synthesizes RNA from a DNA template. 
  2. RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (or RNA replicase) synthesizes RNA from an RNA template. These are essential for the reproduction of most RNA viruses except for retroviruses, which use reverse transcriptase to create a DNA template out of the viral RNA genome.
