This concept is taken from Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, Toward a History of Epistemic Things: Synthesizing Proteins in the Test Tube (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1997), to describe the process whereby an original, hypothetical object of inquiry (e.g., reverse transcription, the "epistemic object") becomes clearer, more accepted, and more concrete as it transitions to being a tool or part of a method (e.g., using reverse transcriptase assays during the search for HIV) for conducting experiments to solve other problems besides the original one.
