A nucleoside is a nucleobase—the basis of the A's, C's, G's, T's, and U's in DNA and RNA—bonded to a sugar, but without a phosphate group. The sugar is either ribose (the R in RNA) or 2'-deoxyribose (the D in DNA). These are nucleotides if one or more phosphate groups are attached.
  • For example: Adenine is a nucleobase. The nucleoside adenosine is an adenine bonded to ribose. The A nucleotide in RNA is an adenosine with a single phosphate group, and ATP is adenosine with three phosphate groups.

A nucleoside analogue is a man-made molecule that mimics natural nucleosides, either by altering the nucleobase or the sugar. For example, acyclovir is a guanosine ("G") analogue, in that both have a guanine nucleobase, but has a replacement for the ribose sugar that prevents it from physiologically functioning like natural guanosine during viral DNA polymerization.

nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) is an antiretroviral drug that inhibits the functioning of reverse transcriptase, which consist of nucleoside analogues that specifically prevent viral reverse transcriptase from functioning.

"nuc" is an abbreviation for both NRTIs and nucleoside analogues in general, since most of the latter only exist to be NRTIs.
