Welcome to the indexed and annotated transcripts of "HIV/AIDS Research: Its History & Future," Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, October 13–16, 2016. These transcripts are meant to accompany the video recordings of the conference, which can be found at http://library.cshl.edu/Meetings/HIV-AIDS/program.php.

This conference and the accompanying transcripts and citation database are a unique resource for anyone interested in the history and science of HIV/AIDS research and care. The materials here offer a path into the research trajectories of some of the world's top HIV/AIDS scientists, many of whom were active in the field from the beginnings of the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s.

If you are citing this conference, please note that the "authoritative" versions are the videos; for citation purposes, the transcripts and index are only a guide. In other words, please cite the videos, and do not cite items in the index.

These transcripts are organized in two major parts: the transcripts themselves, and the index.

  • Each transcript has a full list of citations, an index of terms used, and a search function that allows you find other instances where the speaker is mentioned or participates in the conference.
  • Additional annotations and clarifications are provided on the right hand side of the transcript with hashtags (#'s).
  • Many index terms double as brief glossary entries. These entries are based on the talks, papers cited, and information taken from Wikipedia around late-2020; this information may go out of date.
  • Names are indexed by surname. However, names of speakers and named conference participants are linked to their talk; for example, Susan Zolla-Pazner is linked to Session 7.

  • In addition, there is a publicly accessible Zotero database of all of the citations made during the conference, available at https://www.zotero.org/groups/2528705/cshlhist_hivaids/library.

The index is divided into six sections:

If a gene and a gene product have roughly the same name (e.g., rev), then they are indexed only once.

Citations are in Chicago 16th style bibliography.

Drugs are indexed by their common names, but other names are listed.

There is a full text Zotero database of nearly all of the scientific articles cited by the speakers. This is provided for anyone interested in applying digital humanities or quantitative analytical methods to the corpus of works cited by the speakers. For information and access please contact libraryhelp@cshl.edu. The database is accessible without article full-text (for those who need only citations) at https://www.zotero.org/groups/2528705/cshlhist_hivaids/library.

Any errors in transcription, annotation, and indexing are those of Dr. Daniel Liu, Digital Humanities Consultant for Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Library & Archives. For additional information, corrections, or suggestions, please email libraryhelp@cshl.edu.
