While there are only two major subtypes of HIV (HIV-1 and HIV-2), there are about 40 subtypes of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), each associated with a particular species of non-human primate, and classified into five distinct groups. Group 1, which includes SIVcpz (chimpanzee), SIVgor (gorilla), SIVrcm (red-capped mangabey), SIVagi (agile mangabey), SIVmnd (mandrill), SIVdrl (drill monkey), gave rise to HIV-1. Group 2, which includes SIVsmm (sooty mangabey), SIVmac (rhesus macaque), SIVmne (pig-tailed macaque), SIVstm (stump-tailed macaque), also includes HIV-2.
