The name "acquired immune deficiency syndrome" or "AIDS" was coined by the CDC in the summer of 1982. Up to that point (and in many places well after 1982) the disease was known by other names, largely due to outward-presending symptoms. This term indexes all of these, including:

  • gay cancer
  • gay pneumonia
  • gay-related immunodeficiency (GRID)
  • "4H," referring to Haitians, hemophiliacs, heroin users, and homosexuals
  • Kaposi's sarcoma and opportunistic infections (KSOI), and variants on this theme
  • "slim disease," a term used in Uganda during the 1980s

All of these terms have long been considered scientifically and politically incorrect, because they do not accurately reflect the nature of the disease itself.
