Most antibodies produced by the immune system are highly specific to a single antigen particle and virus strain. However, HIV-1 has very high genetic variability, and thus evades most antibodies because the latter are too specific. Several broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) have been discovered, however, that can neutralize a wide range of different HIV-1 strains.
